During the Northern Song Dynasty, there was a great scholar named Yang Shi. He initially studied under Cheng Hao, a renowned Confucianist, and learned much from him. When Cheng Hao had passed away, Yang Shi traveled to Luoyang to consult Cheng Yi, Cheng Hao's brother, who was also a great educator. Upon his arrival, he found Cheng Yi taking a nap. Rather than disturbing him, Yang Shi respectfully waited outside. It was snowing heavily that day, and he stood for a long time until Cheng Yi awakened. By then, the snow had accumulated to a depth of over one foot. Cheng Yi was deeply moved by his devotion and accepted Yang Shi as his student.

This story later became known as "程门立雪" （Standing in the Snow at Cheng’s Door） and is used to describe the respect and devotion that students show towards their teachers.
